Adventures on the Chattahoochee
Good Times on the 'Hooche - June 24, 2022
We stopped at McIntosh Park for lunch. Kerry handed out partially-frozen bottles of water to each of us. They were greatly appreciated. Back on the river, Jeff and I had to spend some time surfing at a couple of ledges (I think Jeff surfed all the ledges, tiny or large). We took out at Chattahoochee Bend State Park, for about a 10.5-mile day. Once we all got back to the put-in and the cars, Jeff pulled out another treat for all of us-ice cream drum sticks. He makes good use of his 12-volt refrigerator, and the ice cream was a good way to end a great day of paddling.
Thanks to all who participated: Kerry Coburn, Curt Cole, Jeff Sorensen & Basil Youman.

We had an overnight paddling trip scheduled for the Flint River recently, but the heat caused most or all of us to have second thoughts about sitting riverside all afternoon, waiting for the sun to go down. So I canceled the overnight, then posted a day trip on the Chattahoochee River. Four of us braved the warm day, and it turned out to be hot, but not sweltering. The water coming deeply out of Lake Lanier keeps this river cooler than the Flint.
On Friday, 24 June, 2022, we launched at U.S. Hwy 27 Alt., near Whitesburg, GA. The river is a few hundred feet wide for the most part, and five shoals are shown on Joe Cook's guidebook, promising we would not get too bored. We found early on the largest drop was at a Georgia Power plant. They've got a weir to keep the water level high for the intake pumps. We easily ran that and had a little fun to boot. Paddle Georgia happened to be taking place on this day, so we had a few other people in sight most of the day.
