Adventures on the Hitchiti Trail
The gang still enjoying and helping maintain the Hitchiti in November 2019
Photos from earlier years
Saturday, March 7th's Hitchiti Trail hike was a day of firsts for participants. On this bright late winter's day, we had a first trip leading experience for Lynn Rivenbark, a first GWS hike by new member Dave Gardner, and a 2020 first viewing of some partridge berries, jasmine, violets and some other flower I can't remember. Also saw the first sapsucker of the year and Falling Creek in flood stage. Our usual lunch spot was about 6 feet under water on the Ocmulgee. We did manage to re-erect a displaced bridge across a watery ravine on the trail. (What Terry did not mention was the trip leader’s big FAIL at crossing said ravine pre-bridge re-install.) Everyone enjoyed the great exercise and camaraderie before we headed back to fill the afternoon with other activities. Participants were Kerry Coburn, Mary Katz, Margaret Clay, Bonnie Gehling, Dave Gardner, Terry Ross and trip leader Lynn Rivenbark. Thanks to Terry Ross for the great trip report and Margaret for her pictures!!

Hichiti Day Hike, March 7, 2020
Hichiti Day Hike, March 4, 2020
On Thursday, March 4, five GWS members and one guest enjoyed the beautiful spring weather hiking the good ol' GWS stand-by trail.....Hitchiti. The weather was just perfect. Falling Creek that flows to the Ocmulgee River was full and running at a good clip. We hiked to the river, sat on the rocks and ate lunch or snacks, and enjoyed the peace. Bonnie walked on a little further and reported that the low-lying area was very wet and marshy. We hiked back out the way we came in. One of the highlights was watching Bonnie, Kerry and Rob gracefully scoot across a small bridge that was missing half of its slats. The other three of us found a spot where the stream narrowed and hopped across. No-one fell in. All was well. Participants were Margaret Clay, trip leader, Bonnie Gehling, Mary Katz, Barbara Fischer, Kerry Coburn and Kerry's guest, Bob Minarcine.

Hichiti Day Hike, February 19, 2022
On 19 February 2022 @ 10AM, 9 very cold hikers started the 5 mile hike on the Hitchiti Trail near Jarrell Plantation. One hiker was running late and finally showed up at 10:20 to meet trip leader Bud that had stayed back to make sure she got with the group. We all arrived at the Ocmulgee for lunch at 11:45AM.
After lunch we jumped some water ponds & muddy areas to find the dry trail as we hiked south to find the loop back to the trail head. We took a group picture with the Ocmulgee in the background. All had a great time. Attendees were: Bud, Niki, Peg, Dave, Jessica, Dorothy, Harriet, Charlie, Bonnie and Beth.
Two visitors showed up late at the trail head as we were getting to the gate, maybe Joyce & Barbara can come with us on our next trip.
