Sprewell Bluff Hike

On Saturday, February 6, seven GWS hikers enjoyed the trails at Sprewell Bluff Park west of Thomaston. At the entrance to this Upson County park is an overlook which provides a fantastic view of the Flint River way down below. Follow the road down the mountain to the beach and the boat put-in at the river. This is where we began our hike. The trail followed the Flint then turned east toward the road. Once we followed the trail across the road, we entered the “trail closed due to fire” zone. The controlled burn had just about fizzled out with only a couple of smoke puffs visible.

Some special features along the trail were the prohibition cars with bullet holes, (or that is what our imaginations told us), the old homesteads with only the chimneys standing, wells, a whiskey still and the whistling tree. We also witnessed about 15 deer charging through the forest, white tails bouncing as they ran. None of us had ever seen so many deer at one time! You will have to join us next time to see these sites for yourself.

Our hike ended back down along the Flint where we saw a heron perched on a rock in the river waiting for the perfect catch. Participants were Mary Katz, Lynn Rivenbark, Bonnie Gehling, Dave Gardner, Jessica Gardner and trip leaders Shirley Williams and Margaret Clay. Thanks to Bonnie Gehling, Mary Katz and Lynn Rivenbark for the pictures.
